2012 Club President Newsletters

December Newsletter - Merry Xmas all

Hope this finds you are well and thinking about getting your trolley all tuned up over the holidays.

United Video Kiwi Flyer DVD release - Sat Dec 8th

This will be a show of trolleys, Redbox Mini Soap Box Derby and a sausage sizzle at United Video on Vanguard St - 2 to 4   TOMORROW !  Come on down and get your copy.

Redbox Architects have agreed to sponsor the Mini Soap Box Derby so that it can now be free to all primary schools in Nelson and to any future Trolley Kids.

We have had the Redbox Mini Soap Box Derby put into a curriculum Unit Plan form so that schools will now able to run it as a program for years 0 to 3

We plan to have the Redbox Mini Derby running at the Derby all day on the Green. Any Trolley kids can race on the day as well the school kids.

You can get a mini Derby kit for us by emailing us and we will make it up and you can pick up or we can post out for a small fee.  For more info

We have had a few events over the past few months that were lots of fun.

Blowkart racing out in Richmond and Vortex which was great fun.

The Whangamoa Run version 2  - this was a great day out and we had a couple of good runs right from the top , curves and all.....and then lots of shorter runs.

A few fell over and one "went over" but all were OK and they had great tales to tell on Monday !!

So next year we hope to be using the Whangamoa's as our practice race day for the derby ... about 3 weeks before the main event.

We will layout an course the same length as Collingwood that will be "almost" straight .... and those who can "do corners" we will be able to have some runs from the top. So it should be a good testing ground for your new designs. The road has been cleared and swept and is in really good shape.

Santa Parade -  Dec 2nd

We had 5 trolleys and a fine example of American automotive art in this years Santa Parade  - thanks to all that took part and enjoyed a fun "tow" through crowd .

The Roberbertson's Trolley Derby - is SaturdayMarch 16th2013

Registration will open soon (in the next week or so )  we will let you know

New Rules -  We are adjusting the age brackets for new years derby a bit.  Basic change is just extending out the sprinters to 17 and under on trolley day

/collingwood-street-derby/race-categories.aspx

Other changes -

Timing - we are looking at using transponders next year to record all the times ... this will be faster and more accurate but will require that a small Tab is attached to your trolley near the nose ... best not on steel so think about having something for this to attach too ... more details to follow

Getting up the Hill - we are looking at using 4 quad bikes to take trolleys back up the hill this year, towing 9 trolleys each, in 3 staggered rows.

So heat will run differently than in past years ... with Rockets leading off , followed by Zoomers then Sprinters ... so all 72 trolleys down the hill in around 20 mins and then a 10 to 12 min loll in racing while all are towed back up Collingwood St ... then start again and so on ...

This will REQUIRE THAT YOU ALL HAVE A CLOSED EYE HOOK AT the FRONT AND REAR OF YOUR TROLLEY  capable of taking the load of 2 other trolleys behind you.

You will be clipped on the ropes with snap shackles  and as soon as all 9 are on you will be away ... these mean you HAVE TO STAY WITH YOUR TROLLEY DOWN THE BOTTOM and ride up in it.... otherwise it will be left down the bottom and you will get no runs ! - NO closed hooks - NO Tow -

Other things ...

Gordon has put the challenge out to find theWorlds Fastest 18 volt Power Drill Trolley and we will be putting these to the test before each of the new Nelson Falcon soccer games at Trafalgar Park .... first attempt is Jan 13th ... Gordon has it at the moment at around 36 kph .... so think you can beat that better get busy!! ( Rules simple 18 volt drill - with it's standard battery any form of drive - 3/4's of a lap of the velodrome oval with push start to get up to speed then timed over one 500 m lap )

Wanting to buy -a trolley derby cart that that is no longer being used and would be suitable for children aged between 5 and 10 years of age. Please phone Tony or Anna Perkins in Nelson on 545 8449.

President's Newsletter 26 August 2012

1. The AGM - was held on Friday  July 20th at 6.30 pm at Port Nelson offices many thanks to Greg and the Port Company. It was a good night with lots discussed and a some movies watched over a few drinks and fine snacks from The Strawberry Bakehouse

2. Eco Fest - was on last weekend and we had 5 trolleys on display. It was great exposure for the Club and there was a lot of interest in the Power Drill Challenge and how people are converting their trolleys.

3. The Power Drill Challenge
The power drill challenge is ON ... and race day is Sunday Oct 7th from 10am to 2pm at  the velodrome track at Trafalgar Park. We have been looking for a drill sponsor but unfortunately we have only found M10 who will give us a discount on a bulk order of 10 or so. We tested out a cheap 18 volt B&D drill but these just do not have the "grunt" required to push a trolley along (except maybe a kids one).  So you will have to "electrify" your trolley with Dad's best 18 volt power drill.

Check out the details on the Club website at /news/power-drill-challenge.aspx

4. Kiwi Flyer the Movie
The Premier is Tuesday 18th September at The Theatre Royal Nelson.    Invitations went out last week  so if you think you should have got one contact Tony or Louise Allan (it is the "hottest ticket in town" - so unless you were in it or helped organize, don't expect an invite! .... opens on the big screen of 26th)

See the trailer at  http://www.flicks.co.nz/movie/kiwi-flyer/

5. Derby on Film .... the 5 finalists have been chosen  and will be shown at the premiere where the winner  will be announced by Tony Simpson.  To view the finalists clips go to /1553.aspx

6. 2012 Derby Trophies We would like to get the trophies back for engraving so please contact Diane
secretary@nelsontrolleyclub.co.nz  to arrange to drop them off to Diane.

7. Central School "Soap Box Derby" competition
The idea, design a mini Soap Box trolley made out of - you guessed it -  a soap box, ie Mum's empty Surf 1 kg laundry soap box .... There will be about eighty 5 year olds at Central School putting together their entries over the next month with a race-off around the time of the Premier.  It will be very much like the Pinewood Derby for Scouts in the US .... www.pinewoodderby.com

Once again Redbox Architecture as generously agreed to sponsor this event with Central School.

Upcoming Events

We are planning a  number of events for the Club over the next few months - ideas are:-

A.Power Drill Challenge: Get your trolley converted with an 18 volt power drill and come on down to test it out against other derby enthusiasts at Tafalgar Park race day on Sunday Oct 7th-10 to 2pm (see item 3 above)

B.Club day out at Vortex Wind Karting . Murray, who had the carts at the Collingwood Street Derby during lunchtime, has offered us a group discount to come out to their course behind the Richmond A&P Show Grounds so that we can try another force of nature - Wind!  This will now be in Oct as track is closed for winter and they are carrying out maintenance - so I will let you know when this day will be.    In the meantime, check out the website,  http://www.vortexwindkarting.co.nz/

C. Whangamoa Version 2 ... This will also now be in the late spring (possibly Nov) ... dependent on logging activity --- so date to come .... this is a great track of around 1.5 km with curves !!  Lots of fun  ... but we can only handle about 25 to 30 trolleys so book now if you want to come -check out the photos from the last time /gallery/2011-whangamoa-funday.aspx

D. Robertson's Trolley Derby 2013- date is set for Saturday March 16th

President's Newsletter   23 March 2012

Well the ROBERTSON'S TROLLEY DERBY is all "done and dusted" for 2012 and WoW what a day it was ....

A lot of fun was had by all and I think every one enjoyed themselves and we have had nothing but positive comments about the day. A huge thank-you to the residents of Collingwood St who allowed us to use their street for an amazing day of racing.

Also many thanks to our sponsors, big and small who helped make this day possible.... make sure you support them when ever possible.

There was some amazing racing and some pretty cool "bingles" except for the Firebird that met up with the back of a truck a bit too fast but the boys were fine after a good checkover at A&E. We will be making some changes to the braking area next year so that you will be FORCED to slow down as soon as you cross the finish line...

You may have noticed a couple of words in there - "next year" YES the sponsors have all signed on for another year so we will be go in March 2013 - date yet to be fixed.

NOW for a big thank-you to the Committee who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to make the event such a success and to all the Clubs and helpers on the day. Without these dedicated folk (some of whom don't even race!) we would not have this amazing event. Great job team - well done

...and Big Brother Big Sisters raised around $2400 for the day ... great work.

Now to a few things and changes that we will be looking at for next year. We welcome your feedback and thoughts on these ideas.

  1. Finish area - we will be looking creating some kind of a chicane about 2/3rd of the distance from the finish line so that you will not be able to travel past here at more than around 10 kmh.
  2. Practice run times will "seed" the heats into A or B so that you will be racing with people with similar speeds - this will make racing more interesting for you as racers and the crowd.
  3. Extend the morning heats by 1/2 an hour so that lunch would be at 1.00pm with the intention of getting more heats completed. We will look at running the heats a bit quicker and try to get 4 runs for all.
  4. We would also try to fit in a fun run in the afternoon for all those not in the semi's.
  5. Change the age for the Sprinters from 14 to 17 years old- so drivers would be 11 to 17 years of age. This means drivers would move to the Rockets when you are asked to fight for your country ie when you turn 18. Any other thoughts or ideas you have to improve the Derby please let us know president@nelsontrolleyclub.co.nz The Derby on Film competition has proved to be very popular (I can't count the number of interviews I did on race day from budding Spielburgs! ) a couple of entries already in at www.youtube.com/nelsontrolleyclub. Upcoming Events
We are planning a number of events for the club over the next few months, and our ideas are:-

  1. Club day out at Vortex wine carting. Murray who had the blocarts at lunch has offered us a group discount to come out to their course behind the Richmond A&P show grounds so that we can try another force of nature. It will be on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and we will have a couple of dates as it is wind dependent - details to follow http://www.vortexwindkarting.co.nz/
  2. Whangamoa Version 2 ... sometime in May we will have another Sunday Funday out on the old road ... this is dependent on logging activities in the are --- so date to come. This is a great track of around 1.5 km with curves !! lots of fun ... but we can only handle about 25 to 30 trolleys so book now if you want to come-check out last time /gallery/2011-whangamoa-funday.aspx
  3. The Movie - Kiwi Flier will have it's premiere in Nelson at the Theatre Royal - sometime in May we think - keep watching this space for the date when we know.
  4. AGM - will be in June sometime and we will have all the boring stuff but also some movies and food and drink - again, date to come ....

Funny Post-Derby story

One of the Formula NZ trolleys went AWAL on Saturday. It was left on Collingwood on the Green .... I spent a few days sending out emails to all as to who had it, when yesterday I got a call from the Police through Gavin from Big Brothers Big Sisters. Apparently It had been found at 2 am Sunday morning on Bridge St with a large, rather drunk Irish lady in it, being pushed along by two equally drunk Irish revelers. Word is that it was pushed to Trafalgar St by some kids... used by a bunch of drunk St Paddites and painted with green shamrocks !!

I got it back yesterday no worse for wear- .. so it has passed a major test with flying colours and now has a history ... maybe will install a GPS tracker and a video camera on it for next year ! So get out there people and build some more...
/design-tips/formula-one-design.aspx

Well that's it for now must get back to real life and a job ..... many thanks to all that supported us this as below please support them when you are out about looking for products and services during the coming year.
