December Newsletter - Merry Xmas all
Hope this finds you are well and thinking about getting your trolley all tuned up over the holidays.
United Video Kiwi Flyer DVD release - Sat Dec 8th
This will be a show of trolleys, Redbox Mini Soap Box Derby and a sausage sizzle at United Video on Vanguard St - 2 to 4 TOMORROW ! Come on down and get your copy.
Redbox Architects have agreed to sponsor the Mini Soap Box Derby so that it can now be free to all primary schools in Nelson and to any future Trolley Kids.
We have had the Redbox Mini Soap Box Derby put into a curriculum Unit Plan form so that schools will now able to run it as a program for years 0 to 3
We plan to have the Redbox Mini Derby running at the Derby all day on the Green. Any Trolley kids can race on the day as well the school kids.
You can get a mini Derby kit for us by emailing us and we will make it up and you can pick up or we can post out for a small fee. For more info
We have had a few events over the past few months that were lots of fun.
Blowkart racing out in Richmond and Vortex which was great fun.
The Whangamoa Run version 2 - this was a great day out and we had a couple of good runs right from the top , curves and all.....and then lots of shorter runs.
A few fell over and one "went over" but all were OK and they had great tales to tell on Monday !!
So next year we hope to be using the Whangamoa's as our practice race day for the derby ... about 3 weeks before the main event.
We will layout an course the same length as Collingwood that will be "almost" straight .... and those who can "do corners" we will be able to have some runs from the top. So it should be a good testing ground for your new designs. The road has been cleared and swept and is in really good shape.
Santa Parade - Dec 2nd
We had 5 trolleys and a fine example of American automotive art in this years Santa Parade - thanks to all that took part and enjoyed a fun "tow" through crowd .
The Roberbertson's Trolley Derby - is SaturdayMarch 16th2013
Registration will open soon (in the next week or so ) we will let you know
New Rules - We are adjusting the age brackets for new years derby a bit. Basic change is just extending out the sprinters to 17 and under on trolley day
/collingwood-street-derby/race-categories.aspx
Other changes -
Timing - we are looking at using transponders next year to record all the times ... this will be faster and more accurate but will require that a small Tab is attached to your trolley near the nose ... best not on steel so think about having something for this to attach too ... more details to follow
Getting up the Hill - we are looking at using 4 quad bikes to take trolleys back up the hill this year, towing 9 trolleys each, in 3 staggered rows.
So heat will run differently than in past years ... with Rockets leading off , followed by Zoomers then Sprinters ... so all 72 trolleys down the hill in around 20 mins and then a 10 to 12 min loll in racing while all are towed back up Collingwood St ... then start again and so on ...
This will REQUIRE THAT YOU ALL HAVE A CLOSED EYE HOOK AT the FRONT AND REAR OF YOUR TROLLEY capable of taking the load of 2 other trolleys behind you.
You will be clipped on the ropes with snap shackles and as soon as all 9 are on you will be away ... these mean you HAVE TO STAY WITH YOUR TROLLEY DOWN THE BOTTOM and ride up in it.... otherwise it will be left down the bottom and you will get no runs ! - NO closed hooks - NO Tow -
Other things ...
Gordon has put the challenge out to find theWorlds Fastest 18 volt Power Drill Trolley and we will be putting these to the test before each of the new Nelson Falcon soccer games at Trafalgar Park .... first attempt is Jan 13th ... Gordon has it at the moment at around 36 kph .... so think you can beat that better get busy!! ( Rules simple 18 volt drill - with it's standard battery any form of drive - 3/4's of a lap of the velodrome oval with push start to get up to speed then timed over one 500 m lap )
Wanting to buy -a trolley derby cart that that is no longer being used and would be suitable for children aged between 5 and 10 years of age. Please phone Tony or Anna Perkins in Nelson on 545 8449.

President's Newsletter 23 March 2012
Well the ROBERTSON'S TROLLEY DERBY is all "done and dusted" for 2012 and WoW what a day it was ....
A lot of fun was had by all and I think every one enjoyed themselves and we have had nothing but positive comments about the day. A huge thank-you to the residents of Collingwood St who allowed us to use their street for an amazing day of racing.
Also many thanks to our sponsors, big and small who helped make this day possible.... make sure you support them when ever possible.
There was some amazing racing and some pretty cool "bingles" except for the Firebird that met up with the back of a truck a bit too fast but the boys were fine after a good checkover at A&E. We will be making some changes to the braking area next year so that you will be FORCED to slow down as soon as you cross the finish line...
You may have noticed a couple of words in there - "next year" YES the sponsors have all signed on for another year so we will be go in March 2013 - date yet to be fixed.
NOW for a big thank-you to the Committee who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to make the event such a success and to all the Clubs and helpers on the day. Without these dedicated folk (some of whom don't even race!) we would not have this amazing event. Great job team - well done
...and Big Brother Big Sisters raised around $2400 for the day ... great work.
Now to a few things and changes that we will be looking at for next year. We welcome your feedback and thoughts on these ideas.
Upcoming Events
We are planning a number of events for the club over the next few
months, and our ideas are:-
Funny Post-Derby story
One of the Formula NZ trolleys went AWAL on Saturday. It was left
on Collingwood on the Green .... I spent a few days sending out
emails to all as to who had it, when yesterday I got a call from
the Police through Gavin from Big Brothers Big Sisters. Apparently
It had been found at 2 am Sunday morning on Bridge St with a large,
rather drunk Irish lady in it, being pushed along by two equally
drunk Irish revelers. Word is that it was pushed to Trafalgar St by
some kids... used by a bunch of drunk St Paddites and painted with
green shamrocks !!
I got it back yesterday no worse for wear- .. so it has passed a
major test with flying colours and now has a history ... maybe will
install a GPS tracker and a video camera on it for next year ! So
get out there people and build some more...
/design-tips/formula-one-design.aspx
Well that's it for now must get back to real life and a job .....
many thanks to all that supported us this as below please
support them when you are out about looking for products and
services during the coming year.
Tim Bayley
